What Is the WhatsApp Green Tick? Meta's Current Documentation Calls It Blue (2026)

Quick answer: The green tick is the badge that appears beside a business name on WhatsApp once Meta grants that phone number Official Business Account status. It is granted per number rather than per company, it is not available on the free WhatsApp Business app, and two things about it are worth establishing before anyone spends a week chasing it. The color is folklore: Meta's Official Business Accounts documentation, live and stamped 21 May 2026, calls the badge a blue checkmark, and the word green does not appear on it. And the eligibility rules are unsettled inside Meta's own material — the two pages whose job is to list the requirements give four to five concrete, checkable conditions and never mention fame, while a third page, about display names, still says you must be a notable business with substantial press coverage.

The badge is not green

Meta's Official Business Accounts documentation defines an Official Business Account as a business phone number "owned by a business that has been verified as an authentic business according to specific criteria," and says such numbers carry a blue checkmark beside their name in the contacts view. The Business Help Center article on requesting one describes the same thing as a verified badge shown in the profile and in chat thread headers.

The word green appears on neither. It has not disappeared from the internet, though, and there is a mechanical reason for that. The address widely cited for Meta's business-account documentation, developers.facebook.com/docs/whatsapp/overview/business-accounts, no longer serves an Official Business Account page at all: on 10 August 2026 it redirects to Meta's WhatsApp Business Accounts document, which is about WABAs rather than badges, and which contains neither the word green nor the word notability. Anything quoting green-checkmark language from that address is quoting a page that has moved out from under it.

So keep the nickname for talking to customers, and set it aside when reading requirements, where it points at material that has since moved.

Four things get called "verification," and only one of them is the green tick

Four separate objects share the word. They are easy to collapse into one, and the distinctions below are the ones that decide what you are actually being sold.

What it isWhere it happensWhat it gives youDoes it produce a badge?
Meta Business VerificationSecurity Center in Meta Business Suite, at business-portfolio levelEnables platform features; one of three routes to a higher messaging limit; a badge prerequisite in Meta's developer documentation, with one alternativeNo. Meta states it "won't give you a verified badge"
Display-name approvalWhatsApp Manager, per phone numberLets the name you chose be shown to customers; a precondition for the badgeNo
Official Business Account (OBA)Requested in WhatsApp Manager, per phone number; status readable via the APIThe badge, plus in-app discoverabilityYes. This is the "green tick"
Meta Verified for businessMeta's separate subscription product; its contents and price were not verified for this entryA badge obtained by subscribing rather than by reviewYes, and it is not OBA

Two rows are worth pulling out.

Business verification is not the badge. Meta says so in the same words on two of its help pages, the one on verifying your business and the one on uploading documents for it: verifying your business in Meta Business Suite is different from Meta Verified for businesses and will not give you a verified badge. A business completes a document review, sees a verified state appear in Business Suite, and reasonably concludes it is done. It has cleared what the developer documentation treats as a prerequisite, and Meta's help article allows one alternative to it, described below.

Meta Verified is a separate product. The only thing the pages cited on this entry establish about it is that it exists and that business verification is not it. They do not describe its contents or its price, we did not open its subscription surface this run, and the third-party figures we found disagreed with each other, so we publish none of it. Check Meta's own subscription surface for your market. The point that matters here is that two different badges have two different origins, and only one of them is what "green tick" has always meant.

The trust argument is the one vendors reach for, and it is the hardest to support. We have no figures on how a badge affects reply rates, and we found none we could verify.

The discoverability behavior is different, because Meta documents it. Its Official Business Accounts page states that a business phone number without OBA status will not appear in search results when users search for it inside the WhatsApp application, and that a user who has saved the number to their contacts will still see the display name in their own search. Meta closes the paragraph by recommending OBA status "for improved discoverability."

That is mechanical rather than reputational, and it reframes the question. Without the badge you are findable only by people who already have your number saved. With it you are findable in the app. Whether that is worth pursuing depends on how your customers reach you, which the companion verification guide works through alongside the paperwork.

Four things the badge does not do. It does not raise your messaging limit, which is a separate mechanism: new business portfolios start at 250 unique recipients contacted outside a customer-service window in a moving 24-hour period, calculated at portfolio level and shared across every number in it. It does not change what a message costs. It does not exempt you from template approval, opt-in requirements or the 24-hour service window, all covered in the channel guide. And it does not shield a number from the quality-rating consequences of bad sending.

Where Meta's own pages stop agreeing

Three Meta pages, all live on 10 August 2026, give three overlapping but non-identical answers about who qualifies.

The developer documentation lists five criteria: compliance with the WhatsApp Business Messaging Policy; at least 30 days registered on the WhatsApp Business Platform; the owning business portfolio verified through Business Verification; two-step verification enabled on the number; and an approved display name.

The Business Help Center article on requesting an OBA lists the same shape with one substantive difference. It says you will "either need to complete business verification or demonstrate a record of sending high-quality messages with a minimum of 1,000 conversations over 30 consecutive days." That alternative does not appear in the developer document.

The Business Help Center article on display names says something neither of the others does: "If your business wants to have a WhatsApp official business account, it must be considered a notable business. A notable business is a well-known business that has a substantial presence in news articles from publications with sizable audiences."

That third statement is the notability bar, and it is the reading that circulates in vendor and agency guides, which is why so much of that material tells small businesses not to apply. Note what it is and is not. Neither page that enumerates requirements contains it, and the page that does is about display names.

There is a strong argument against reading it as dropped, and it deserves stating because it cuts against this entry's own framing. Criterion five on the enumerated list is an approved display name. The Meta article governing display-name approval is exactly where the notability sentence lives, and it is phrased as a requirement rather than an aside. So the enumerating pages may be incorporating notability by reference, through that fifth criterion, rather than omitting it. We cannot tell you which reading Meta intends, we cannot tell you it dropped the bar, and we will not date a change we did not witness.

Where a platform fits

No vendor grants the badge. Meta does, and the one thing you can settle without a vendor's cooperation is its Meta partner status, which is listed in Meta's Business Partner Directory rather than only on its own product page. What a provider can actually do for you around these gates — partner verification, surfacing OBA status, and escalating to Meta when the application option is missing — is in the verification guide; the ranked shortlist is at best WhatsApp chatbot platforms.

FAQ

What is the WhatsApp green tick?

The informal name for Official Business Account status, defined at the top of this entry. It puts a verified badge on the business profile and in the chat thread header. Meta's current developer documentation calls that badge a blue checkmark in the contacts view, so "green tick" is a nickname that outlived the wording it came from.

Do I have to be a famous brand to get the green tick?

Meta's own pages disagree, which is why an honest answer has to show both. The developer documentation and the help article on requesting an OBA list only concrete conditions, with no mention of fame. A separate help article about display names still says the business "must be considered a notable business" with substantial press coverage. All three were live on 10 August 2026. Our reading is that notability may still operate as a discretionary assessment after the listed gates, but it is no longer stated in either list of requirements, which gives a small business meeting those criteria a defensible reason to apply.

Is business verification the same as the green tick?

No, and Meta says so directly on two of its help pages: verifying your business in Meta Business Suite is different from Meta Verified for businesses and does not give you a verified badge. Business verification is a document review of your legal entity at business-portfolio level, and the developer documentation treats it as one prerequisite for the badge rather than as the badge itself. The paperwork it involves is in the verification guide.

Does the green tick increase my message limits or lower my costs?

Neither. Messaging limits are a separate mechanism set at business-portfolio level, starting at 250 unique recipients contacted outside a customer-service window per moving 24 hours. Per-message pricing is set by template category and recipient country, which the channel guide covers.

Can I buy a verified badge on WhatsApp?

Meta sells a Meta Verified for business subscription, which is a different product from the Official Business Account program. We did not verify this run what badge it confers inside WhatsApp specifically, so check Meta's own subscription surface for your market. What is certain is that OBA status is requested and reviewed rather than sold. An agency offering to sell you "the green tick" is either reselling a Meta Verified subscription under a misleading name or selling application-preparation work, which is legitimate but should be described accurately.

Do I need the green tick to run a WhatsApp chatbot?

No. The badge affects how you appear and whether people can find you in in-app search; it gates none of the automation capability. Treat it as an upgrade to a working deployment rather than a gate in front of one. What to automate first is in our WhatsApp automation guide.
