Best Help Scout Alternatives in 2026 for Small Teams That Want AI and Live Chat
Quick answer: Help Scout is a shared-inbox help desk priced per user: $25 on Standard, $45 on Plus and $75 on Pro, with a free plan for up to five users. Teams look elsewhere when the per-seat bill grows, when they want a chatbot that resolves questions before an agent sees them, or when they want live chat and social channels in the same inbox. Of the platforms we have reviewed, Tidio (75/100, $29 a month with 10 seats included) is the cheapest way to get a shared inbox, live chat and an AI agent in one tool, and Intercom (76/100, from $39 per seat per month) is the closest like-for-like help desk with the strongest AI. SendPulse (86/100, from $12 a month) suits a team that also needs email and marketing, and Chatbase (73/100, from $40 a month) is an add-on, not a replacement: it keeps your help desk and adds an AI agent. None of the four copies Help Scout's email-first workflow exactly, and this page says where each falls short.
Alternatives at a glance
Help Scout is the right answer for a specific buyer, and it is worth saying who. If your support is mostly email, you want a clean shared inbox that feels like a mailbox, and a handful of agents and a knowledge base are enough, Help Scout's own pricing page lists exactly that from the free plan up, with live chat and its Beacon widget on the paid tiers and unlimited AI Assist and AI Summarize.
We have not published a Tier 1 review of Help Scout, so it carries no editorial score and this page makes no claim about its reliability, deliverability or support against the four platforms we have tested; a Help Scout review is not on our hands-on queue yet. This page rests on Help Scout's own pricing page, read on 30 October 2026, and on our published reviews. Alternative scores and prices come from each platform's review ledger at monthly-billed rates, per our pricing methodology. Who did this work is on our editorial team page.
One scope note. "Help Scout alternatives" mixes two searches: people who want another email-first help desk (Front, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk and Missive territory), and people who want an AI chatbot with live chat that can take over part of the inbox. This page serves the second group, because those are the platforms we have reviewed. We rank no help desk we have not tested; for the first group, our Zendesk alternatives and Freshdesk alternatives pages show how those products compare with platforms we have reviewed, and our best helpdesk chatbot list ranks the ones with a bot.
Why you are looking for a Help Scout alternative
The bill grows with every seat
Help Scout prices each user: its pricing page lists $25 for Standard, $45 for Plus and $75 for Pro. Illustrative arithmetic, not a quote: five agents on Standard come to $125 a month and five on Plus to $225, before any add-on. The page shows a "-16%" badge on its monthly/annual toggle but does not label which billing mode its displayed figures reflect, so confirm the monthly rate in writing if you do not want an annual commitment. Compare that with Tidio, where the paid tiers include ten seats, so the bill follows conversation volume, not headcount.
Plan limits show up as you grow
Standard allows two inboxes and Plus five, with extra inboxes at $10 a month on annual billing, and Pro requires at least ten users. The page also states different inbox maximums in two places (Standard shows 2 in the plan table and 20 in the inbox description), which is a reason to ask Help Scout which one applies to you before you commit.
AI answers are billed per resolution
Help Scout's AI Assist and AI Summarize are listed as unlimited, and AI Drafts appear on Plus. Its automated answering product, Envoy, is a separate add-on billed at $0.75 per resolution on a monthly basis, with a spending cap you can set, and a resolution counts only when the customer gets an answer and does not escalate or ask for more. That is a fair model, but it is a second meter on top of the seats. Intercom's Fin charges $0.99 per outcome, so the two are in the same range; illustratively, 200 resolutions a month cost $150 on Envoy and $198 on Fin before seats. Our reduce chatbot costs guide and deflection rate calculator help you model your own volume.
You want more channels in one inbox
Help Scout is built around email, with live chat on the paid plans. Teams that also take WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger conversations often want a unified inbox across all of them. Tidio and Intercom both list those channels in our reviews; see our best omnichannel chatbot ranking for the full comparison.
You want the bot to resolve, not just draft
Drafting a reply for an agent and resolving a question without one are different jobs. If your goal is to lower the number of conversations that reach a person, read our glossary entries on deflection rate and resolution rate before you choose, because vendors count them differently.

The 4 best Help Scout alternatives
The list runs in fit order, not score order. Readers leaving Help Scout usually want a lower per-seat bill and AI in the same tool, so the cheapest all-in-one option comes first. Intercom, the closest help desk, comes second because of its seat-plus-outcome pricing, and Chatbase comes last because it complements a help desk instead of replacing one.
1. Tidio — The cheapest shared inbox with live chat and AI
Best for: Small teams that want live chat, a shared inbox across web and social channels, and an AI agent without paying per seat
Tidio is a live-chat-first platform that added a chatbot layer, which is the right direction for a team coming from a help desk. Its unified inbox pulls in the website widget, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, email and Shopify store chat, with assignment and internal notes as standard, and every paid tier includes ten seats. The Free tier is usable: 50 conversations, ten seats and a one-off allowance of 50 Lyro AI conversations. The cost shape to understand is that billing follows conversations, not users: Starter covers 100 and Growth starts at 250 for $59, with higher volume priced up the ladder, and macros, user permissions and automatic chat assignment sit on Growth. Our review scores its compliance at 58/100, its weakest area for regulated teams, and it does not offer Telegram or SMS natively.
Choose Tidio over the others when: you have a small team, take chat from several channels and want a predictable monthly bill. Skip it if: you live in email and need deep ticket automation, or you need documented compliance controls.

2. Intercom — The closest help desk, with the strongest AI
Best for: Support teams that want a full customer-service platform where an AI agent resolves a share of conversations before an agent sees them
Intercom is the like-for-like move for a team that outgrows an email-first inbox. Our review calls its Fin AI Agent the most developed AI surface in our batch, scores AI and NLU at 88/100 and compliance at 90/100, and lists web chat, email, WhatsApp, phone, SMS, Facebook and Instagram in one inbox, with 14 days of trial and no card needed. The price is the catch: Essential is $39 per seat monthly, Advanced $99 with 20 free Lite collaborator seats, and Fin adds $0.99 per outcome on top, so pricing scores 42/100 in our review. Illustratively, five agents on Essential are $195 a month before Fin, against $125 on Help Scout Standard, so the AI has to remove enough conversations to pay for itself. Run the numbers with the deflection rate calculator before you commit.
Choose Intercom over the others when: AI resolution is the point and you have the budget per seat. Skip it if: your main reason for leaving Help Scout is cost.

3. SendPulse — One bill for chat, email campaigns and a basic CRM
Best for: Small teams that want chatbots, a live chat widget, email campaigns and a free basic CRM together, and care more about marketing than ticketing
SendPulse has the highest composite score on this page, and it is a different kind of tool. Our review describes a broad marketing-automation suite (email, SMS, chatbots, web push, CRM, landing pages and live chat) that happens to include a strong chatbot module, priced by subscribers, not by seat. The Free plan gives 3 bots, 500 subscribers and 10,000 messages a month, and Pro starts at $12. It scores 96/100 on pricing, 90/100 on channels and 71/100 on compliance. What it is not is a ticketing help desk: you will not find the shared-mailbox workflow Help Scout users expect, so treat it as a replacement only if your support is chat-led and your team also sends marketing email.
Choose SendPulse over the others when: price and breadth matter more than help desk depth. Skip it if: your support is email tickets with assignment, collision detection and reporting by agent.

4. Chatbase — Keep Help Scout, add an AI agent
Best for: Teams that like their help desk and want an AI agent trained on their own documents to answer first
Chatbase is not a Help Scout replacement, and we list it because many teams do not need one: they need the AI half. Our review describes a focused retrieval-based agent product, priced by message credits ($40 Hobby for 700, $150 Standard for 4,000, $500 Pro for 15,000), with auto-recharge billing at $40 per 1,000 credits that can make overages larger than buyers expect. It scores 80/100 on AI and NLU and 86/100 on compliance, but channels only 50/100, and HIPAA eligibility is limited to the custom Enterprise tier. If your agents are happy in Help Scout, adding an agent in front of it is the lowest-disruption change and can be tested on the Free plan. Our chatbot knowledge base guide covers what the agent needs to read.
Choose Chatbase over the others when: the help desk is fine and answers are the problem. Skip it if: you need the inbox, live chat and social channels in the same tool.

Also compared, not scored. Teams that want another email-first help desk often shortlist Front, Zendesk, Freshdesk, Zoho Desk or Missive. We have not reviewed any of them and make no claims about their features or prices here; see Zendesk alternatives and Freshdesk alternatives for how those products sit against platforms we have tested.
How the ranking was constructed
17-dimension scoring rubric (methodology v3.12.1)
Every ranked platform is scored 0–100 against the rubric below — 17 dimensions in 6 weighted clusters. Cluster weights are published; per- dimension weights inside each cluster are documented in the methodology page and the per-review POC notes sibling file. Cluster weights were rebalanced in v3.12.1 (May 2026) to bring Pricing-and-Value closer to AI/NLU parity — reflecting the SMB persona's reality where price is a primary decision driver alongside AI capability.

How to choose your Help Scout replacement
Start from where your conversations arrive and how many people answer them.
Decide whether you need a help desk or a chat platform
If most of your volume is email and you value ticket workflows, look at another help desk or keep Help Scout and add an AI agent. If more of it is website chat and social messages, a chat-first platform with a shared inbox costs less per agent. The no-code vs low-code chatbot guide and the vendor evaluation checklist turn this into a scorecard.
Count seats and conversations separately
Multiply Help Scout's per-user price by your agents, then compare with Tidio's conversation tiers (ten seats included) and Intercom's per-seat price plus Fin outcomes. Add the AI meter to every option, because it is where bills drift. Our chatbot ROI guide walks through the sums.
Test the handoff
Write down how a conversation reaches a person today and run the same case on each trial. Our human handoff glossary entry and handoff design guide cover what a good transfer carries over.
Run both, then cut over
Keep Help Scout on its current plan while you move one channel or one queue to the new tool and compare first-response times for two weeks. Our 14-day migration playbook has the sequence, and the live chat glossary entry explains what to measure.

- Pricing data
- Help Scout prices (Standard $25, Plus $45, Pro $75 per user per month; free plan up to 5 users; Envoy $0.75 per resolution; 15-day trial) come from helpscout.com/pricing read 30 October 2026, which shows no update date and does not label the billing mode of its displayed figures. The cost illustrations use invented team sizes and volumes labeled as such. All alternative pricing is carried from each platform's Tier 1 review ledger, monthly-billed, re-checked 7 October 2026.
- Scoring data
- Editorial scores and dimension figures are pulled directly from Chatbotscape Tier 1 review frontmatter using our 17-dimension methodology v3.12; this page recomputes nothing. Help Scout carries no score because no Chatbotscape review of Help Scout exists, and for the same reason this page compares billing models and documented capabilities, not product quality.
