Best tawk.to Alternatives in 2026 — When Free Live Chat Stops Being Free
Quick answer: tawk.to's live chat software is free with no cap on agents, chats or websites. You pay for extras, and each one is bought per website: $39 a month (or $348 a year) to remove its branding, $29 to $399 a month for the AI Assist chatbot, and from $1 an hour for hired agents. Teams usually switch when they want a stronger AI layer, their own brand on the widget across several sites, or ticketing and integrations that a free tool does not prioritize. The best tawk.to alternatives in 2026 are Tidio ($29/mo Starter, ten seats and a Claude-based AI agent, the closest like-for-like), SendPulse ($12/mo Pro, website chat plus WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Telegram in one inbox), BotPenguin ($29/mo Little, five seats and a bot, with a free tier to pilot on), Intercom ($29/seat plus $0.99 per Fin resolution, when chat has to become a helpdesk) and Landbot (€40/mo Starter, for sites where chat is mainly lead intake). tawk.to carries no editorial score here because we have not published its Tier 1 review.
Alternatives at a glance
tawk.to is a sensible default, and plenty of small businesses should stay on it. Launched in October 2013 and, by its own account, never venture-funded, it gives away the full chat product: agent apps for desktop and mobile, a ticketing inbox, a knowledge base, and an omnichannel inbox that its product page says covers live chat, email, WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS and Telegram for unlimited team members. Its founder's letter explains the model plainly: the software is free and the company earns from branding removal, AI Assist and a hired-agent service.
We have not published a Tier 1 review of tawk.to, so it carries no editorial score and this page makes no claim about its chat quality compared with the five platforms we have tested; a full tawk.to review is on our hands-on queue. What this page is built on instead is tawk.to's own help center, add-ons page, FAQ and founder letter, all read on 2 October 2026. Where those pages disagree with each other, we say so and follow the help center, which is where the billing rules live. Alternative scores and prices come from each platform's published review ledger at monthly-billed rates, per our pricing methodology. Who did this work is on our editorial team page.
A scope note. If you run one website, answer chats yourself, and do not mind the "Powered by tawk.to" badge, you may not need an alternative at all. This page is for the business that has started adding add-ons, or is about to. If you are choosing a tool from scratch, start with our best live chat software ranking instead.
Why you are looking for a tawk.to alternative
Four reasons come up most. Each traces to a line on tawk.to's own pages, not to a complaint about the chat window.
Every add-on is bought per property
tawk.to's help center is explicit: add-ons "aren't shared across properties," so a paid add-on applies only to the website (property) you bought it for. One site with branding removed is $39 a month. An agency or a business running three sites that wants its own brand on all of them pays $117 a month for branding alone, and AI Assist on all three is three subscriptions. The add-ons page puts it as "per property, not per seat," which is a good deal for a large team on one site and a poor one for a small team across several sites.
The branding price depends on which page you read
The founder's letter and the add-ons page say removing the branding costs $29 a month. The help center's add-on pricing article says $39 a month billed monthly, or $348 a year, which it notes "equals $29 per month." So $29 is the annual rate and $39 is what you pay month to month. Budget for $39 unless you are ready to commit for a year. The same help article lists what the add-on covers: the widget badge, branding in ticketing emails and chat transcripts, a custom support email address, the knowledge base, and custom domains for the chat page, chat link and pop-out widget. The add-ons page sells the same thing under the name Whitelabel.
AI Assist is metered in message credits
AI Assist, tawk.to's chatbot, is the add-on most switchers compare. The billing article lists four plans: Hobby is free with 100 message credits a month and one AI agent; Growth is $29 a month with 1,000 credits, three agents and, importantly, escalation to human agents, which the Hobby plan does not list; Business is $99 with 5,000 credits and assisted setup; Enterprise is $399 with 20,000. One credit is used each time the AI sends a message, including its Smart Reply suggestions to your human agents and AI Commands, so a conversation in which the AI sends five messages uses five credits, not one. Extra credits cost $30 per 1,000 and do not expire, and if you run past everything you have bought, the article says usage can go into a negative balance you settle later. Testing in the preview pane is free.
That model is fine at low volume. It is worth modeling at 500 conversations a month, where an average of four AI messages per conversation is 2,000 credits: over Growth's allowance, so either Business at $99 or Growth plus $30 in top-ups, before the per-property multiplier.
The figures you will see quoted do not agree
A smaller point, but it matters for anyone doing due diligence. tawk.to's founder letter cites a Datanyze and BuiltWith table putting its share of the live chat market at 20.07% and says "1.7+ billion" people interact with a widget each month. Its FAQ says "more than 35%" of websites with live chat use tawk.to and "over 2 billion" people interact monthly. Both may be true at different dates, but neither page dates its figure. Treat both as vendor claims.
And the reasons to stay. The core product costs nothing for any number of agents, which no tool on this page can match. The FAQ says there are no limits on concurrent chats and no ads, and that tawk.to will never sell your data. Its inbox covers WhatsApp, Messenger, SMS and Telegram as well as website chat. And the hired-agent service, $728 a month for round-the-clock coverage per the help center, is something none of the alternatives below sells; we have not tested it and cannot speak to answer quality. If the badge does not bother you and AI is not part of the plan, staying is a reasonable decision.

The 5 best tawk.to alternatives
The list runs in fit order, not score order, because the best replacement for a free website chat tool is not our highest-scored platform. SendPulse holds the top score at 86/100 and sits second; Intercom outscores two of the others and sits fourth because it is the most expensive way to replace a free product.
1. Tidio — The like-for-like switch, with a stronger AI agent and ten seats
Best for: Small teams that want website chat like tawk.to's, with AI answering and more of the integrations built in
Tidio is the closest product to tawk.to on this page: a live-chat-first tool whose inbox, widget and ticketing came before its bots. Our reviewer worked it on a live trial account. Live chats and tickets sit in separate queues, Lyro (Tidio's AI agent, which runs on Anthropic's Claude) has its own bucket, and a visitor who asks for a person lands in Unassigned with a notification; the review rates inbox UX and handover 4.5/5. A widget with a working quick-reply flow took nine minutes from signup. Free, Starter and Growth each include ten seats, so a tawk.to team of up to ten does not hit a seat wall.
The difference from tawk.to is where the meter sits. tawk.to never meters human chats; Tidio does, at 50 conversations a month on Free, 100 on Starter at $29 and up to 2,000 on Growth at $59. Lyro is metered separately, and the 50 AI conversations on Free and Starter are a one-off allowance, so AI answering every month means Growth. For a site that handles a few hundred chats a month and wants AI on most of them, model Growth at $59 against tawk.to's AI Assist at your volume rather than comparing headline prices. The review also documents a native Shopify connector that shows order status in the chat.
Choose Tidio over the others when: you want to keep the same kind of product with a better-documented AI agent, and your volume fits its conversation tiers. Skip it if: you handle thousands of human chats a month on a tight budget, where tawk.to's unmetered model is hard to beat.

2. SendPulse — Website chat and every messenger channel for $12
Best for: Businesses that answer customers on WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger as well as the website, and send email campaigns too
The highest editorial score on this page, ranked second because it replaces more than tawk.to does and is less of a pure chat tool. SendPulse's $12 Pro tier includes a native website live chat widget (added in June 2023) and chatbots on WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, Telegram, Viber and TikTok, all feeding one shared inbox with assignment and notes. AI Agent blocks sit inside the flow builder and ChatGPT integration is included in Pro, and the same account runs email and SMS campaigns, priced separately from the $12 chatbot plan. For a tawk.to user who already answers WhatsApp in a second app and sends newsletters from a third, that consolidation is the case.
The limits are evidence and focus. Our review walked a logged-in account and confirmed the Teamwork tab where agents claim conversations, but the account was single-user, so multi-agent handling was not exercised, and the review does not document a seat cap at each subscriber tier or a ticketing module. Meta's WhatsApp conversation charges pass through on top, as they do everywhere.
Choose SendPulse over the others when: chat is one of several channels and cost matters most. Skip it if: you want a chat-only tool your team learns in an afternoon, or tickets with SLAs.

3. BotPenguin — A bot and five seats for $29, with a free tier to compare on
Best for: Budget teams that want a bot in front of a small shared inbox and can pilot before paying
BotPenguin is the budget switch for teams whose main reason to leave tawk.to is the AI. Its free Baby tier carries a website widget plus WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Telegram with 1,000 messages a month, enough to run the bot on a slice of real traffic next to tawk.to before deciding. Little at $29 adds a shared inbox with five team members ($7 each beyond that) and 3,000 messages a month; choosing between GPT, Claude, Gemini and other models starts on the $99 King tier. Our review scores pricing 79/100, practical UX and support documentation 80/100 each.
The trade is the inbox. Our review rates it 3.5/5, functional assignment with admin and agent roles rather than helpdesk depth. Free is single-user, so the shared inbox starts on Little. Trust signals are thinner than the platforms above, and the review's testing notes, which pair a free-trial walkthrough with a higher-tier handover scenario, are being re-audited, so treat its inbox rating as provisional.
Choose BotPenguin over the others when: you want a bot answering first and a small team behind it for under $40 a month. Skip it if: your agents spend most of their day in the inbox and need it polished.

4. Intercom — When chat needs to become a helpdesk
Best for: Support teams that have outgrown free chat and need tickets, email, phone and an AI agent in one inbox
Intercom is the move for a business whose tawk.to setup has turned into a support operation. The chat widget opens into a full helpdesk whose inbox spans web chat, email, WhatsApp (all paid tiers), phone, Facebook, Instagram, X and Slack. Fin, the AI agent, is billed $0.99 per resolved outcome rather than per message, which is easier to budget than message credits when conversations run long. Our review rates the Fin-to-human handover 5/5 on context transfer, and says plainly that the scenario figures are an anchored editorial assessment from vendor documentation and trial screenshots, with paid-tier testing pending.
It ranks fourth because it is the most expensive way to replace a free product. Seats are $29 each on Essential, so three agents are $87 a month before Fin, and our review scores pricing 42/100 and value for money 25/100. There is no free plan, only a 14-day trial.
Choose Intercom over the others when: you need tickets, SLAs and phone, and your agent count is small and stable. Skip it if: the reason you are leaving tawk.to is cost.

5. Landbot — When most of your chats are really leads
Best for: Service businesses whose website chat mostly collects quote, booking or intake details before a person replies
Many tawk.to widgets on service-business websites spend their day on the same exchange: a visitor asks for a quote, an agent asks five questions, and the details go into a CRM. Landbot is built for that. A guided, form-style conversation collects the details first, and a person joins with the answers already in the thread; our reviewer observed multi-agent live chat with notes and routing in a trial workspace, and the review projects context transfer on handover at 4/5, an anchored editorial assessment rather than a measured run. The visual flow builder scores 88/100 for bot building in our review, and G2 reviewers repeatedly call it the cleanest in the category.
The constraint is seats and metering. Starter at €40 includes two seats and Pro at €100 three, so it suits a team of two or three, not ten. AI chats are metered at €1 each beyond the plan's allowance. Billing is in euros.
Choose Landbot over the others when: chat is your lead form and two or three people follow up. Skip it if: you need open-ended support chat for a larger team.

Also compared, not scored. Crisp and LiveChat are the two other live chat tools most tawk.to switchers price. Crisp's pricing page lists a free plan for two agents and Mini at $45 a month per workspace for four; LiveChat lists $25 a month for a single user and $59 per person on Team at monthly billing. We have not reviewed either, so neither is ranked here; our best live chat software page sets them next to the platforms above with one-, three- and five-agent costs, and our Crisp alternatives and LiveChat alternatives pages cover them in depth.
How the ranking was constructed
17-dimension scoring rubric (methodology v3.12.1)
Every ranked platform is scored 0–100 against the rubric below — 17 dimensions in 6 weighted clusters. Cluster weights are published; per- dimension weights inside each cluster are documented in the methodology page and the per-review POC notes sibling file. Cluster weights were rebalanced in v3.12.1 (May 2026) to bring Pricing-and-Value closer to AI/NLU parity — reflecting the SMB persona's reality where price is a primary decision driver alongside AI capability.

How to choose your tawk.to replacement
Start from what you are paying tawk.to now, or about to.
List your add-ons and multiply by your sites
Write down every add-on you use or plan to use, and multiply by the number of properties. Branding plus AI Assist Growth on one site is $68 a month at monthly rates; on three sites it is $204. If that number is below $30, staying on tawk.to is likely cheapest. Between $30 and $60, the decision is about features rather than price, so compare AI quality and the inbox on a trial. Above $60, Tidio Starter or Growth, SendPulse Pro and BotPenguin Little all come in lower for one website; check each vendor's terms for several sites before you price three, because our reviews do not document multi-site pricing on their entry tiers. Our best live chat software seat-cost table shows where each one's own meter starts to bite.
Count AI messages, not conversations
Pull a week of chats and count how many messages an AI would have sent, not how many conversations there were. tawk.to bills per AI message; Intercom bills per resolved outcome; Tidio's Lyro and Landbot's AI chats count conversations. The same traffic can look cheap on one model and expensive on another. Our deflection rate and containment rate entries cover how to measure what the bot actually resolved, and the bot vs human cost calculator puts it in dollars.
Run both before you remove the snippet
Export your contacts, tickets, shortcuts (canned responses) and knowledge base articles first. Install the new widget on one page or one site while tawk.to keeps the rest, route a week of chats through it, and compare first response time on both. Our 14-day migration playbook has the sequence, and the handoff design guide covers the bot-to-human rules you will rebuild.
One tawk.to-specific check before you cancel: add-ons are billed per property, and the AI Assist billing article says a downgrade only takes effect on the next billing date, so cancel each property's subscriptions individually and time the switch to the end of a billing cycle.
